When it comes to television comedies, season two is when things start to get interesting. Adults star Amita Rao feels the sentimentโs true for the FX comedy, which returned for its second season yesterday (Aug. 27).
The 27-year-old actress and comedian plays Issa, the delightfully confident and outrageously funny member of the core Adults gang. When season one ended, Issaโs boyfriend Paul Baker, played by Jack Innanen, marries another member of the group Anton, played by Owen Thiele, in order to stay in the country โ Paul Baker, always first and last name, is Canadian much like Innanen.
The only problem is that Paul Baker and Anton have palpable chemistry with one another that even Issa canโt deny, and that dynamic plays big into the wildly funny second season of the show. The love triangle has been done before in comedies, and Raoโs more interested in dynamics outside of the romantic relationship.
โWhat was always been interesting to me was the tension between Issa and Anton as best friends,โ Rao tells The Hollywood Reporter on a recent Zoom. โMe and Owen had a lot of fun talking about what was said and unsaid behind the scenes because it never really made sense to us that they wouldnโt have debriefed about this.โ
Rao knew that Adults was special from moment one. โI hadnโt seen a show that really encapsulated a Gen Z ethos [like Adults did],โ she says. When the show premiered, she and her co-star Malik Elassal called each other to talk about the โenergy shiftโ that happened. It was different than she was used to working as a comedian. She adds, โWhen youโre doing a live show, you feel like an instant energy exchange.โ
While Rao puts a lot of herself into Issa, par for the course for a comedy like Adults, she is not the character she plays on television. โPeople totally do believe that I am Issa,โ she says, explaining she can instantly tell by the way someone says hello to her.
