Sharing a streaming account with family can be mildly annoying under the best circumstances. You open Netflix and discover your recommendations have been overtaken by preschool cartoons. Someone watches 14 seasons of a police procedural under your profile. Suddenly the algorithm you’ve spent years carefully training has absolutely no idea who you are anymore.
For one teenager, however, the unwanted recommendations were the least important part of the problem.
After moving out of their mother’s home and in with their grandparents, they realized their old Roku TV was apparently still connected to their personal account. Family members were using their streaming services, filling their viewing history with everything from children’s shows to true crime—and potentially gaining access to some much more private content in the process.
The teen asked Mom to sign out. That request didn’t exactly go over well, so they disconnected the old TV themselves.
Then, somehow, the family got back into the account.
So on a later visit, the teen decided there would be no third round. They wiped the Roku clean in the early hours of the morning—and woke up to a family that was absolutely furious about losing access.
Hey, so i’m a teenager and I’ve recently moved away from my mother’s house because of her abusive, toxic nature, and now I live with my grandparents.
Recently, I noticed on my new roku TV at my grandparents’ house, I was seeing weird recommendations that were absolutely not my interests (Baby shows, black dramas, true crime slop, and police shows). And when i signed into my Tubi and Fandango accounts, I saw that they had been watching the same sh*t on my own personal tubi!!!
I was angry and I called my mother to tell her to sign out of my accounts.
IMMEDIATELY.
Being the person that she is, she began to get mad at me and act like I was being some sort of b*tch because I just didn’t want to see crap like Bluey, Paw…
