A solo developer just pulled the plug on one of the most recognizable screensavers on streaming hardware. According to Ars Technica, Jim Sachs will not renew the license that lets Roku ship its Aquatic Life screensaver, and the reason is Fox. Roku users have been told the fish tank disappears on December 1, 2026, and affected devices will switch to the Roku City screensaver automatically.
The timing is hard to miss. Fox Corporation announced on November 6, 2026 that it completed its acquisition of Roku, Inc., a deal reported at roughly $22 billion. Sachs says he learned of the planned purchase, decided he could not stay in business with the new owner, and let the annual license lapse. He also says the payments were his primary source of income.
This is a small story with a large lesson for anyone who builds…
